The first weeks of nursery are a big transition — for your child and for you. This guide walks you through building safety, predictability, and a goodbye ritual that helps both of you feel held.
1. Prepare the story
Children settle faster when they know what's coming. In the week before, talk warmly and simply about nursery — who will be there, what the day looks like, and when you'll return.
- Use a consistent, cheerful phrase for pick-up: "I always come back."
- Read a picture book about starting nursery together.
- Visit the space once before the first full day if you can.
2. Build the goodbye ritual
A short, predictable goodbye is kinder than a drawn-out one. Pick a small ritual — a special wave, two kisses, a hug and a phrase — and keep it identical every time.
Lingering tells your child there's something to worry about. A confident, warm goodbye tells them they're safe.
3. Regulate yourself first
Children read our bodies before our words. If drop-off spikes your own anxiety, take a slow breath and soften your shoulders before you say goodbye. Your calm becomes their calm.
4. Expect a settling curve
Some children settle in days, others in weeks. Tears at drop-off often stop within minutes. Ask staff to message you once your child has settled — reassurance helps.
